“Five great things about a northern Vietnam bicycle trip organized by Spirit Travel:

12% downhill curves. Highways in northern Vietnam are new, smooth and steep. When a rider leans into a 10, 12, even 15% downhill curve, he feels the road, relishes the speed and passes the motorbike riders who flew by on the uphill.

Finding the real Vietnam. Our guide, Nguyen Khong Thanh Binh, took us where we wanted to go. We preferred the secondary and village roads, where people live and work. We laughed with farm workers, exchanged friendly glances with villagers, ate a real Vietnamese HotPot and listened to children who showed off the one English word they had mastered – “hello.”

Soft beds, delicious breakfasts. We stayed in hotels with soft beds, hot showers and quiet air conditioning. The gardens and stone stairs of one hotel made it look as if it belonged in a fairy tale. In the morning, breakfasts ranged from local, simple dishes to multiple-selection buffets.

Little treasures of a beautiful country. It wasn’t just all bicycling. We boated on the dreamy Lake Ba Be. We ventured through the damp, dark Dong Nguom Nago (Hiding Tiger Cave). We watched rehearsals for a patriotic dance at Cao Bang, a provincial capital. And we waded into the river below the Ban Gioc waterfalls, coming within 10 feet of the border of China.

Great bikes. Our guild outfitted us with XXL Trek mountain bikes. The aggressive tires and front shocks allowed us to ride anything from dirt paths to newly paved highways. And when we got a flat or a busted chain, our guide made quick repairs.”
