MOUNTAINS OF LAOS

DAY 1 MON / (THU) / FRI: HOUEIXAY-PAKBENG (-/L/D)

Meet upon arrival at Houei Xay immigration checkpoint and transfer to the boat pier.
Embark on the Luangsay Cruise boat (join-in). Cruise down the Mekong River, “Mother of Waters”. The mighty river has maintained its untamed character with rapids and pristine rainforests along each bank.  En route, stops at Yao and Hmong minority villages. Lunch on board. Arrival in Pakbeng in the afternoon. This rustic town-village sits on a steep hillside and offers spectacular views over the Mekong River. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

 


DAY 2 TUE / (FRI) / SAT: PAKBENG-LUANG PRABANG (B/L/D)
Breakfast at the hotel. Continue the cruise towards Luang Prabang. Lunch on board.
En route, stop at Pak Ou and visit the sacred caves which house over a thousand Buddha statues.

Arrival in Luang Prabang, transfer (private) and check-in at the hotel. The crown jewel of Laos and former Lanexang, Luang Prabang, is perhaps the best-preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. If time permits, walk up to the top of Phousi Hill for the sunset and the panoramic view of the city. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
DAY 3 WED / (SAT) / SUN: LUANG PRABANG (B/L/D)
Early morning, watch the alms giving to hundreds of monks along the main road. Return to the hotel for breakfast.

Visit the National Museum (former King’s Palace) displaying a collection of personal artifacts of the Royal Family. Continue to visit Vat Mai, built in 1796, famous for the five – tiered roof of its wooden sim, and Vat Xieng Thong, considered as the most beautiful temple with roofs that sweep low to the ground. Then visit Vat Visoun, the site of an impressive stupa, That Makmo, stylistically more Srilankalese than Lao. Lunch at local restaurant. Discover the old city and participate in a Baci ceremony. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
DAY 4 THU / (SUN) / MON: LUANG PRABANG-VIENTIANE
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport for flight to Vientiane.
Meet upon arrival at Vientiane Wattay airport, transfer and check-in at the hotel.  Lunch at local restaurant.

Visit Vat Sisaket, the oldest original temple in Vientiane. Nearby is Ho Phra Keo, once the royal temple of Lao monarchy. One of the most photographed images of Vientiane is Patousay, the victory gate also known as Anousavari. Another famous Vientiane landmark is the That Luang Stupa. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
DAY 5 FRI / (MON) / TUE: VIENTIANE-PAKSE (B/L/D)

       
Breakfast at the hotel. Early morning transfer to the airport for flight to Pakse.
Meet upon arrival at Pakse airport, transfer and check-in at the hotel.
Then board a long-tail riverboat for a short cruise on the Mekong River towards the former royal capital of Champassak and continue by car to the pre-Angkorian Vat Phu Temple (6th-13th centuries). Vat Phu Temple was listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2002.
Lunch at local restaurant.

Continue to the Boloven Plateau and visit a tea and coffee plantation and the Tadfane Waterfalls. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

 


DAY 6 SAT / (TUE) / WED: PAKSE (B/L/D)
      
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Khone Phapheng Waterfall, the largest cascade on the Mekong River along its 4.350 km journey from the Tibetan Plateau towards the South China Sea. Cross the Mekong River to reach Khong Island, blessed with lush tropical vegetation, serene monasteries and lovely fishing villages. Lunch at local restaurant.

Walk around the island before driving back to Pakse. En route, stop at Ban Khiet Ngong village and take an elephant ride to reach the enigmatic Phu Asa temple which lies amidst the dense jungle. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
DAY 7 SUN / (WED) / THU: PAKSE-CHONGMEK-UBON RATCHATHANI (B/L/-)
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit Pakse Museum, which displays artifacts from the different ethnic groups of the Boloven Plateau. Then drive to the weaving village of Ban Saphay and discover the typical fabrics of Southern Laos.

Lunch at local restaurant. Transfer to Chong Mek immigration checkpoint (border crossing to Thailand) and continue to Ubon Ratchathani airport for departure (air-tickets are not included in tour price).
